A Simple Guide to Ayurveda - The Tridosha system

Ayurvedic Medicine believes that health exists when there is a natural balance between the three basic 'doshas' or 'humours' of the body, which are known as 'Vata', 'Pitta' and 'Kapha'.

It finds that the balance of the three 'doshas' is of vital importance in order for good health and wellbeing to be maintained.

This does not mean that each of the three doshas has to be equal with the others, but that the individual needs to maintain (as far as possible) the original doshic make-up that was inherited at birth.

In modern life with its high levels of environmental pollution, poor diet, the climate in which one lives, the stresses and strains of everyday family and working life, it is all too easy for imbalances to occur in the body.

Ayurvedic treatments work to restore the body's 'homeostasis' or 'balance' thereby improving health and wellbeing in the individual.

Vata is made up of the two elements space and air.

Vata provides the impulse that mobilizes the nervous system. It is the principle of movement governing the body's sensory and motor functions.

Pitta is made up of the two elements fire and water.

Pitta governs body heat, metabolism and transformation in the mind and body. It controls how we digest foods, how we metabolize our sensory perceptions, and how we discriminate between right and wrong

Kapha is made up of the two elements water and earth.

Kapha governs all of the body's structure, including lubrication of mind and body. It controls weight, growth, lubrication for the joints and lungs, and the formation of all new cells and tissues.

Ayurvedic - Kansa Vatki Foot Massage

Kansa Vatki Foot Massage has been introduced to the UK by Narendra Mehta, who has been practicing 'Body Work' for over 25 years and leading Indian Champissage training for over 15 years.

Kansa Vatki Foot Massage is a deeply relaxing treatment that works holistically by rebalancing body, mind and spirit.

Ayurvedic Foot Massage using the Kansa Vatki has been in existence in India for centuries and works on the feet and lower limbs. The feet being the seat of the meridians and many nerve endings, neural receptors and marma points.

The treatment is conducted using a small metal bowl containing copper and zinc, which is lubricated with purified butter (Ghee) or oil, and rubbed against the soles of the feet and lower limbs to create the most relaxing treatment imaginable.

The Kansa Vatki

Foot Massage

As in reflexology, which targets 'reflex' points, corresponding with bodily organs and systems, Kansa Vatki Foot Massage gives attention to massaging 'Marma Points', an important part of Ayurvedic Medicine.

Marma points are found where flesh, veins, arteries, tendons, bones and joints meet up. There are 107 Marma points, which form vital energy channels running throughout the body. Several of these Marma Points are targeted on the legs & feet (the true seat of 'prana' - the body's vital energy), stimulating the body's own innate ability to rebalance and harmonise the 'doshas'.

The seven Chakras (energy centres) cited on the feet (the foundation of consciousness) are also massaged during the treatment to balance the soul.
